HAND-WRITTEN THANK YOU NOTES – HOW PRIMITIVE!
Mom told me to always write thank you notes to hosts – for dinners, parties, weekends, you name the occasion. And then other people suggested sending a written thank you note after interviews or other business events. In today’s world how strange this seems! Yet I have found that this simple action will separate you in a good way from nearly everybody else, and do something in return for the host’s kind hospitality.
So what might you do with the concept of thank you notes in the 21st century? Here are a few things to think about:
• Successful people usually are good at thanking others.
• It takes precious time and effort for others to:
• Host you (or invite you out) for lunch or dinner.
• Make time in a busy schedule to interview you for a job.
• Do the complex task you needed done exceptionally well.
• An e-mail thank you is good; a written thank you is better.
• When you write a thank you note you will feel better for having done something special.
These kinds of written courtesies are important in the U.S. and even more so in the global culture. Many nations exist at a higher level of politeness and kindly interactions that we in the U.S. find hard to understand. Whatever you can do to rise to that higher level of courtesy will help you as you interact with people from around the world.
Mom knew what she was talking about….
